The Winnipeg Jets were a professional hockey team that was based in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. They played in both the World Hockey Association (WHA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1972 to 1996. But due to financial troubles, in 1996 the franchise moved to Phoenix, Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes.On May 31, 2011, True North Sports and Entertainment announced it had signed an agreement to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers from Atlanta Spirit, LLC , and relocate the franchise back to Winnipeg, Manitoba subject to approval by the NHL's Board of Governors on June 21, 2011. It has been confirmed the team will be re-named (the rights to the Thrashers name will remain with Atlanta Spirit), although whether or not the Thrashers will adopt the Winnipeg Jets name or have a new name has yet to be announced.
